Conference check-in begins at 8:45 a.m.; the program begins at 9:30 a.m.

3. When should I pick up my daughter?
The conference ends at about 3 p.m.

4. What is the cost to register?
The cost for each student or adult is $10. This fee includes lunch and all workshop materials.

5. That's such a low price! How do you keep your fees so low?
Math/Science Interchange is a non-profit organization with 501(3)c status. We are dedicated to introducing girls in grades 5-8 to careers in math and science. To this end, each year we organize the Expanding Your Horizons conference that hosts up to 200 girls and 40 adults. The conference organizers are volunteers from Los Angeles area universities and industries who raise funds from local organizations to support the conference.

Donations are accepted and are tax deductible. Checks may be made out to "Math/Science Interchange." Contact us with any questions at math_science_interchange at yahoo.com.

6. May I accompany my daughter during the day?
No. There are capacity constraints due to fire codes so we request that you do not accompany your daughter during the day. We have also noticed that girls are more inhibited when an adult accompanies them. In the interest of providing your daughter with the most enriching experience possible, adults are not allowed to accompany their daughters to the program. There is a separate program that adults may attend. The cost for the adult program is $12/person.

7. Is there a vegetarian option for lunch?
Yes.

Registration
1. What is the deadline to register?
Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. We have a maximum capacity of 200 girls and 40 adults.
Once we reach this limit, we stop registration. This has often occurred by the end of February.

2. How do I register my daughter?
Registration may be initiated on-line. On-line registration is not complete until
we receive payment. At this time, we only accept checks made out to "Math/Science Interchange." You will receive a confirmation postcard once your registration is complete.

Alternatively, you may print out the registration form and mail the completed form, along with your check made out to "Math/Science Interchange." You will receive a confirmation postcard once we receive your registration.

3. How do I register several students at one time?
Registration for multiple students may be completed on-line. All postcards will be mailed to one address. Please be prepared to enter the students' names and subject category preferences. At this time, we only accept checks made out to "Math/Science Interchange." You will receive a confirmation postcard once your registration is complete.

Alternatively, you may print out the group registration form and mail the completed forms, along with your check made out to "Math/Science Interchange." You will receive confirmation postcards once we receive your registration.

4. How do I register an adult for the conference?

5. How do I register multiple adults for the conference?
At this time, adults must register one at a time, although you may send one check and a list of the adults and/or students whose registration is being paid.

6. As an adult, if I only intend to listen in on the keynote speaker and have lunch, do I need to register?
Yes. Only registered attendees are allowed to attend conference events. This also helps us ensure that you are here because you have a student attending the conference.

7. Is my 3rd grade or 9th grade daughter eligible to attend?
We welcome students of all grades, but the material may be too advanced or too elementary for your daughter.

8. Is my son eligible to attend?
We welcome all students, but your son should keep in mind that the vast majority of participants will be female.

9. Do you offer group discounts?
Sorry, but no.

10. Do you offer scholarships?
Yes. We have a limited number of scholarships. Please contact us at 310-954-4015 or math_science_interchange at yahoo.com.

11. Our schedule has changed and my daughter can no longer attend. Can I transfer her registration to someone else?
Yes. Please pass the confirmation postcard to the student who will attend in your daughter's place. The postcard is your proof of registration.

Schedule
1. When will I receive my schedule?
You will pick up your schedule when you check-in on the day of the conference.

2. What is a student's typical schedule like?
The conference begins with registration, at which students receive their schedule.
Everyone attends the keynote speaker session followed by a hands-on workshop.
Lunch is served, then students attend two additional hands-on workshops. Finally,
we gather together to thank everyone for coming and pass out door prizes.

3. Can I request a specific workshop?
No. Each student requests a subject category that they prefer, e.g., Health, Physics, or Math. We optimize the students' schedules so that each girl is placed in at least one and in no more than two workshops within this subject category. Thus, each girl can "expand her horizons" by being exposed to other areas of math and science.

Optimization programs are widely used to maximize benefit subject to certain constraints. In this case, we attempt to maximize the number of girls placed in workshops in their chosen subject category, subject to the room capacity constraints dictated by fire codes.

4. Can I be placed in the same workshops as my friends?
No. The purpose of the conference is to "expand your horizons." It is important to meet the
greatest number of new people on conference day.

5. Can I switch workshops?
No. For safety, we must comply with fire codes that establish the maximum room capacities.
